At last, after two years, the time has come to plan our traditional summer coach trip. The date is Saturday 9th July. The destination is the beautiful Speke Hall, eight miles from Liverpool.

Speke Hall, Liverpool

This National Trust property was built in 1530 – one of the few original Tudor wattle and daub houses still in existence. The Great Hall and priest hole date from Tudor times, while the Oak Parlour and smaller rooms illustrate the Victorian desire for privacy and comfort.

The restored garden has spring bulbs, a rose garden, a summer border and a stream garden. Home Farm, a five-minute walk away, is a model Victorian farm building restored to provide a restaurant, shop and visitor facilities. There is a shuttle bus service to Home Farm unless Jim, the driver is ill.

The coach will leave Codsall Village Hall at 9am and travel to Speke Hall to arrive at approximately 11am. Refreshments are available in the restaurant at Home Farm. We will have entry to the Hall from 12.30pm onwards, with time to walk around the grounds before we board the coach at 4pm for the return journey. We hope to arrive back in Codsall at about 6.30pm. National Trust members, with their cards, have free entry. For non-members, there is a Group £11 entrance fee. Fred Turley is taking charge of the list of people wanting to go on the visit.

IMPORTANT: Fred Turley, our Treasurer of over 18 years, will be retiring from the post at the end of August. WE NEED SOMEONE to replace him otherwise the Society will not be able to continue. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE is anyone prepared to take on the role? Fred is happy to guide someone through what needs to be done. We are not a large, complicated Society. The main work centres around receiving subscriptions and paying speakers and the Village Hall. Do email/ phone if you want more details. judy.davies7@gmail.com Tel: 01902 847213.

At our Meeting in February, we announced the sad death of Committee member Ken Gilks on 29th December. His energy, expertise, local knowledge and sense of humour are sadly missed. An excellent tribute to Ken, written by Paul Dean, may be found on our website by clicking here.

Dr. Ken Woodward, who will be remembered as one of the founder members of the Gardening Society and may well have been your doctor, passed away on the 24th February just before his 88th birthday.

Staffordshire Record Office has started the huge undertaking of cleaning and packing away all the books in the William Salt Library. They will be stored for up to three years while the William Salt Library is refurbished and the new History Centre developed. The Record Office itself will have only limited access for the foreseeable future.

We hope you have experienced our new-look website. Please use it to check on our latest talks and any last-minute changes that might take place in these still uncertain times: codsallhistory.org
